The other day I won the 10″ vinyl test pressing of Sea of Bees Bee Eee Pee ep. To say I was excited would have missed my mood by a mile or two. I can be geeky about vinyl! I came across Sea of Bees, aka Jules, when I saw her support Smoke Fairies at Lancaster Library.
The Bee Eee Pee ep was Jules’ first time in a recording studio and captures her essence perfectly. Her soft, yet strong guitar playing, and a voice that whispers into your ear, ideal for summer days in April. The warmth of such days take you by surprise, much like Sea of Bees. Jules voice and lyrics drifts me into a dreamy state, where time slips to evening and campfires and stars. ‘I don’t need you, but I want you.’, Jules voice sings with desire on Skinnybone.
The Woods follow, which was also released as a single, and is my favourite. The Woods begins with hypnotic guitar picking, ‘Close your eyes dear, close your eyes and breathe, it’s no wonder why you can’t sit still’. A caring love song, ‘I didn’t mean to make you cry, I just wanted you to see the boy inside’, Jules sings, her voice etched with concern, with hope he’ll understand.
Willis follows, the beat pulls me in, resonates, Jules sings ‘You said that you love me. That doesn’t matter anymore’. A sad tale.
Sea of Bees debut album, Songs for the Ravens, is out now.
